4fter, ideas?

4fter, ideas?
I went to my lfs today to pick up a new filter for my axie tank, and they had a several second hand tanks.
So, I picked up an ex display, 4ftx15"x18" tank :D I've re-organised my room to make space, and I've managed to acquire a very heavy duty shelving unit made from a strong metal frame and wooden supports for each shelf
I asked about what kind of species he wants more of, and what he sells a lot of and would be willing to take. These were; good quality female guppies, galaxy rasboras and corys.
I got a JAD filter (very large, about 2400lph)
I'm thinking of partitioning the tank for snail babies, and either to breed bettas, or one of the above.
Ideas?

That works out at 212L so the filter will be perfect.
Guppies are easy to breed but require alot of selective breeding to get the perfect line and along the way you will get alot of un wanted guppies. Galaxy rasbora could work but from what ive heard the fry are hard to feed because there so small. I you can get a rare type of corys there defiantly worth it have a look at black schultzei corys they cost £10-20 each but well worth it if you can breed them and alot of people want them or green or gold lazer corys. I would go for a pair of medium sized cichlid like any acara, angelfish, rainbow cichlids, cupid cichlids, keyhole cichlids, convict cichlid, T Bar cichlid, honduran red point cichlid, festivem cichlid or a type of plec like L183 are quite wanted but not to common and fairly hard to breed or L133 or L114 both fairly common and fairly easy to breed.

You might have to get them ordered in or from a private breeder because there not always in lfs but do pop up every now and again. You will need to separate the eggs from the parents though because they will eat them. Thats the good thing about cichlids and plecs most will guard there own fry so you can raise them all in the same tank.

Yeh
I did some really interesting work with African Rift Lake Cichlids and seeing the tiny fry in their mouth was great. Did have to separate some to put into growing tanks, so cool to see all the fry come out :P
My faviourite species while I was there was pundamilia nyererei,

Wondering how difficult they are to get hold of *does research*

I really cant help you on african cichlids. All i know is they need a higher ph than most american cichlid lol and i know about 4 types altogether lol. They car stunning fish but dont beat SA and CA cichlids for me. I just had a quick look around and they dont seem to common but you might find a private breeder with some or you lfs might be bale to order them in.

Re: 4fter, ideas?
Yeh, had a look round too, some on aquarist-classified, but don't wanna risk postage as I'd like to see them in person before I bought.
Only reason I know about the Africans more is because the uni specialised in them :P Will have to have a good look in my lfs knowing that more species are available to me due to tank size.
Cichlids may be a better choice as my ph is around 8.4

Re: 4fter, ideas?
You could ask if they have any spare fry and grow them on in your tank.
Thats sounds quite high but perfect for Lake Malawi, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika cichlids. The only ones i know are yellow labs, peacock cichlid, jewel cichlids and frontosa. Which isnt really much help.

Re: 4fter, ideas?
I know them mainly by their latin names as thats all they ever called them in the department :P But I do know that the yellow labs are libidichromis caeruleus. They are lovely
Done a post of practical fishkeeping and seeing what kind of advice I get
Possibility of me getting some left over fry, but it's likely they'll be very inbred, and not good strains as they don't breed for aesthetics.

Sounds good.
Thats a shame. I think the best place to get them from will be a private breeder so it might be worth looking on aquarium classified to see if there are any in your area.

Re: 4fter, ideas?
If you cant find any you could always try central american cichlids. Most like there ph 7.5-8.2. So if you had a few bits of bogwood or peat your ph would be perfect. A pair of TBar cichlids, honduran red points or firemouth cichlids would work.

Re: 4fter, ideas?
Still looking around for cichlids, asked a few lfs' if they can get them in and they're looking into it.
Considering just sectioning it off and using it to breed fighters, depends on whether I can get some good quality boys and girls.

Either way sounds good. Or for something a little different what about breeding a type of wild bettas? Something ive always wanted to try but never been able to get them for a good price. And the plus to that is in a big tank like this you could just keep all the males and females together but the males arent as aggressive as splendens.
