Post by Nataliey on Mon Sep 13, 2010 9:25 pm

Im really interested in getting some cold water fish as in the 'goldfish' iv seen in the lfs but wondered if any of you guys could advise me which types are best...i do like the ones with the 2 tails but really dont like the ones that look like their eyes are going to pop!

yOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WITH THE BUBBLE EYES AS OTHERS CAN ATTACK THEM. tHE ORANDA HAS A REALLY BIG WEN, i HAD ONE LIKE THAT ONCE. tHE LAST ONE LOOKS LIKE A RANCHU BUT WITH TELESCOPIC EYES AND A FANTAIL? i DONT DO THAT WELL WITH FANCIES. AT THE MO I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL RED CAP ORANDA THAT WONT LET ANYONE LIVE WITH HIM. ALSO A TANK WITH 2 FANCIES IN THAT THE ORANDA WOULDNT LET IN HIS TANK. AND A POND FULL OF ORDINARY GOLDFISH. IAM SORRY THIS IS IN CAPITALS BUT I TYPED IT BEFORE I NOTICED. ROFLMAO XX

The last is a telescope - most known type being the black moor. You can get them in panda, orange/white and calico too. They are really cute and grow REALLY fast - mine went from an inch to 6 in less than a year, and is now nearly 8 inches at 18months old!

They need a large tank, preferably 4ft as they need space, and an even larger filter - 2x what would be recommended for the tank at the very least. SUPER messy, but also super cute Wink

I honestly like the pop-eyes best, they are adorable, IMO. ^^

I wouldnt go down the fancy route if im honest. They can get to 8"+ and need tanks with alteast 10X turnover. Plus they are quite prone to illnesses like swim bladder because of the inbreeding and deformity's that have been breed into them. If you want something a little different what about sticklebacks?

Change of plan all together as gold fish where just a passing thought as they really took my eye in the lfs...my spare tank will be going to 3 male bettas instead, lol!

May look into it in the future but just not now, would need a bigger tank for starters, lol!

The bubble eye needs a bare bottom tank and 30 gallon to one fish
