1's bigger than the other!

Post by Nataliey on Mon Sep 27, 2010 11:35 am

I have 2 BN's as you know both bought as brown bn's and now the bigger one of the 2 has really turned brown with creamy coloured spots and trims but the other is still quite small but is a lot lighter in colour than the other bn, its more of a grey with white spots.

Here's a photo of the big brown BN

This is the smaller lighter coloured BN

They are both eating well but the smaller one is growing a lot slower

They look great. The first one has a right little belly on it.
Theres nothing to worry about its quite common for 1 to be dominant and and grow alot faster than any of the others. With mine from the same batch i have some that are over 2" and others that are still only pushing 1"
Its a bad pic but shows the size diffenece in mine. There all the same age but theres a huge difference

I wouldnt worry about the colour it varys alot even from the smae spawn. I have some that are almost jet black and ones that are a light brown and every thing inbetween.

It does tend to get more of a difference the longer there together because the bigger one will get the first pick of the food so that will get bigger while the smaller one just gets whatever is left over. But saying that i wouldn't worry about it because there in a big tank so there's enough food to go around. What you could find is there both males so one is dominant. With mine i found out of the bigger ones there was only 3 or 4 males and then loads of females and the smaller ones all seem to be turning male so they must have just been the less dominant ones so there growth slowed. Does that make any scene? haha

About 2"-2 1/2" they should start but you might find if ones dominant the other one could take till 3"+ to start getting bristles.

There a type of Ancistrus which is the family the BNs are in aswell. They get to about the same size but are known for being more aggressive and they need black water conditions to thrive and breed.

You should some nice cichlids and catfish and a few dithers would lok great.

It looks like the smaller BN is catching up in growth as the bigger one is bulking out at the moment.

May need to get an albino one tomorrow if i can find any...or 2!!!
