ph :S

Post by furry_catfish on Tue Oct 05, 2010 6:49 pm

Hi everyone Very Happy ,I have been trying to lower the ph in my tank for ages,at the moment it is around 7.8,so far I've tried peat and ph down.A website says that you can soak the peat in water than add the water to the tank and that will lower the ph significantly,is that true?,also how long does it take for the peat to take effect?

thanks

chris

p.s the high ph is caused by my tap water as all the other tanks are at the same ph

I would stay away from PH down mate. It makes the Ph very unstable. You can add peat to the filter. Is it for the 40G? You could put some peat in a pair of tights and put them in one of the compartments on in the filter. Wood helps lower PH alot as well. Is there a reason you need to lower it? Most community fish are fairly adaptable to PH as long as its not to extreme.

no its for the 66 the fish keep dying on me,all but the shrimp,I think I may replace the harlequin with a school of zebra danios and the cories for somthing else,do you know how long it takes for the peat to take effect because it says ressults immidiate, but so far it doesn't seem to be doing anthing

the cories bodies all seemed to be in good shape before and after the died but one harlequin was bent,i think it was a parasite but the other inhabbitants of the tank seem fine

Hmm how many have died? Could have been internal parasites. If they have them they normally stop eating and go skinny and have white stringy poo.

that definatly wasnt the case for the cories, some of them were a little shy but i put that down to new fish stress, apart from that they seemed healthy, decent sized and,as far as I can tell, their poo was normal
