Kritter Keepers, and it's off-brands

Post by Luimeril on Wed Oct 06, 2010 10:03 pm

anyone else here use them? :3 three of my bettas live in them, Chappy being in a half-gallon, and Freya and Cup in two gallons. i have two spare two gallons, but they both are cracked, so i'm not using them until i can get some sealant. i, personally, love them. they're cheaper than tanks, and have wonderful lids that keep the fish in, and everything else out. sure, they don't always look pretty, but fish are not decoration, so i don't care. :d i'm trying to find batteries for my camera, so i can show off my "Pla-House" tanks. :3

No, I don't use them - I'd only consider them for hospital tanks. Half a gallon is FAR too small in my opinion, two gallons is small but half a gallon? That's tiny!
I'm sure most people will agree with me that the minimum a betta should be kept in is 5 US gallons.
My fish is most definitely a decoration, I chose him because he's a beautiful fish and should be admired when he's looked at. Therefore I bought him a nice big tank he can swim freely around in and decorated it with live plants to become the centerpiece of the room.

Have to agree with Mutsu - 1/2 gallon is very small. I'd say that in my divided tanks, my fish each get about 2.5-3 gal each, but that's only because the tank has a large filter and the overall water capacity is high - smaller volumes tend to give problems for me anyway.

I use critter keepers as hospital tanks and quarantine, they are handy.

You can exist in a closet, but what kind of life is that? Fish are designed to
swim! I would try to upgrade if possible.

I wrote a reply to this and it's disappeared! Gremlins in the works...

I use them as quarantine or hospital tanks, the one I have is about 1 UK gallon, so about 1.6US gallons. I suppose a smaller home is OK if you're doing 100% water changes all the time, but an unheated, unfiltered environment can cause fluctuations in water quality and temperature which can cause fish considerable stress, which is not viable for the UK.

I also personally really hate plastic plants and am obsessed with aesthetics, so for me a cycled planted tank with room for wood and gravel is the only way to go and it makes a more natural environment for the fish.

My boys in the divided tank have three UK gallons each per divided space (there's four), and my smallest tank which houses one betta is three gallons as well, this is because anything smaller is virtually impossible to cycle, the water stats would be all over the place.

well, Chappy's half-gallon is temporary. VERY temporary. as in, she's only been it it, with her Java moss, for a few days.

i was always told 2 US gallons or bigger. so all but 3 of my darlings are in 2 or 3 gallons.

money's the biggest issue for me. i would get a 20 long, and divide it, if i could, but not having a true job stops that dream. i get what i can, and KK's are $10 for a 2 gal, while a 5 gallon tank is $45 for the whole set-up.

shoot, i was told 2 gallon RubberMaid containers are fine! xq

Have you tried looking on eBay Lui? People find some real bargains on there! Or Craigslist?

None of my bettas live in anything less that 3 gallons. I would imagine that half a gallon is pretty cramped for wee Chappy. Plus, the water changes you would have to do in order to maintain good water quality, eeesh!

i'm always checking CL. people here seem to only have 50 gallons or bigger, for $75+. Dx

i never thought about ebay. i'll have to look.

everyone thinks i'm odd for enjoying water changes. lol i'm in the middle of cleaning Chappy's 3 for her to go back in. had an algae attack on it, and wanted to scrub it good. i hate that green gunk!

Craigslist is a good option. I bought a 10gl. complete setup including test strips( not recommended, but better than nothing) for $40. Also picked up two complete 10gl. tanks for free with lots of extras. Oh, and a bare 20gl. long delivered! You have to be persistent, patient and lucky too!

It only cost a little time and you never know what you might luck out on.

My little Flame lives in a 3 gallon tank and is so extremely active I can see why a lot of people say bettas do better in at least 5 gallons. I would never put a betta long-term in anything smaller than 3 gallon though.

I use the large KK. It's around $20 and is 2 1/2 or 3 Gals. I've been using them for quite a while now and there's no problem using a small heater in them.
