Greetings Fellow Fish Lovers

Post by sylvia1572 on Thu Oct 28, 2010 6:45 pm

I've already asked a question (and got some great advice) but thought I'd also introduce myself and say Hi.

My name is Sylvia and I live in Montana. I am definitely a "novice" fish person although I've had some sort of tank/fish most of my life (a long time Rolling Eyes ) LOL......right now I have:

20 gallon long with ONE Chinese Algae Eater!! (they told me at the stupid pet shop that he would only get 2 inches.........he's now 7 or 8 inches). He's mean to other fish so he has to be alone.

5 gallon with 4 neon tetras and 2 Cory catfish.

10 gallon which I hope to divide and have 2 male bettas.

Is there a page on this forum that might explain what some of the shortened terms are: such as...........what is a BN???

Hi Sylvia Smile welcome to the forum!

A BN is a bristlenose plec, one of our members breeds them.

Grr to the Chinese algae eaters... they're sold by a lot of shops in place of Siamese algae eaters, which are smaller and peaceful. We have one too, it was sold to my boyfriend's brother who was told it would stay small and had it in a 15l (under 3 US gallon) tank with two other fish! It now lives in a community tank with tetras and snails.

Welcome

BN=bristlenose plecs. Ive got over 100 lol.

The CAE needs to be rehomes IMO. 20G isnt big enough for them fully grown. They should get to 12" and chunky. I would rehome it soon before it gets stunted.

He came from PetSmart three years ago and they don't want him. The other two local fish stores don't want him either. He really doesn't make use of the 20L tank...........99% of the time he hides in his cave so........I've got a very nicely set up tank in the living room with one fish that no one ever sees. Rolling Eyes I've had people tell me to just kill him......no way!

There mainly nocturnal so he will be coming out at night. They are a pain to rehome because of how aggressive they are its very limited to what you can keep them with.

I know.....he had a Tiger Barb for a tank mate the last two years who just died. The Tiger Barb was also aggressive and basically chased his buddies to death so..........he and the CAE had to keep each other company.

I just want NICE fish! Once the CAE is gone (whenever that is) I will stock that tank with neons, guppies or some other peaceful species.

My betta will be downstairs in my office with me. The tank is recycling and almost ready. I have the divider in and "just to make sure"...I will check that he cannot get to the other side before I buy my new betta !

Thanks for the good advice kizno1.

Not meaning to sound harsh but theres alot nicer fish out there than neon and guppies. It might just be me but i always like something a little different.
In a 20G you could go for a coldwater asian biotope like im doing in my 21G. Theres loads of great fish that work in that size
Garra
Hara
Akysis
Danios
Barbs
Badis

And alot more. With the danios and barbs theres so many other types that are so much nicer IMO than the standard leopards ect. Stuff like Danio nigrofasciatus, Danio aesculapii, Danio tinwini, Danio choprae. All of them might be harder to find but well worth the trouble IMO and you should be able to find them fairly easy if you search around.
And thats just i idea theres so many other things you can have other than just guppies and neons. Not that there not nice thats just my opinion on things.

Over time you just get used to using them its alot easier than using common names. To tell the truth i had to look up the danios common names.
