Haha.
They dont look like they could do much to fend other fish of but they give it a good shot. They normally swat there tails at it and if it gets to close they turn around and start smashing into them with there fin spines sot they can do damage when the want.

I think the intimidation factor does most of it, unless the other is 100%
predatory or just plain mean! All instinctive.

Yeah most fish just back away once it starts threatening it but then ive never head anything big enough to see them as food in with them. But even then most things dont eat BNs or most catfish because of the starp spines they have on there fins and most are slightly venomous.

Re: Tank rack

I just tested the water in the shrimp(4") enhanced 5gl. and its already a
strong 5.. Water is really cloudy after about 36hrs. and the shrimp is already
breaking down.

I rung some media of the established filter over the new filter. Hopefully
adequate.

Once the ammonia level starts to drop can I remove the shrimp and change
to ammonia drops or is it better to leave as is?

Plan on checking level in 24hrs. which I imagine is sooner than necessary.

Good good.
Its up to you whether you change to ammonia or leave the shrimp. The ammonia probably will be easier to regulate so its probably best to change IMO

I think I will change over when the level drops. My luck I'd get halfway
through the cycle and the shrimp would run out of gas! lol!

Does the ammonia harm the moss ball? I didn't think to remove it until now.

Im not sure if im honest but it wont do it any good at all. I would give it a good wash and put it in one of the other tanks.

Haha. i wouldnt think it would have done much damage this quick. Just make sure yo do give it a good wash before putting it in another tank because otherwise it might take a load of ammonia with it.

What I did was took around 1/4 of a gl. with treated water, dropped it in
and shook it around. Changed water and repeated a 2nd , 3rd, and 4th
time. Hopefully that flushed it well enough!

It was a small one to begin with and I even split it in half. Its about the
size of a golf ball.

Yeah that sounds perfect.

They do grow fast. I got my 3 about the size of a golf ball and within about 6months they where the size of a tennis ball.

I hadn't really noticed or thought about it but they are about 25-30% bigger.

I'm concentrating on just trying to the Bettas alive and looking forward to
the same with Cichlids/Plecos ATM. I should get some Java Fern and Java
Moss to go with silk.

Plus I'm just not impressed with the quality of plants at the lfs's as they already look weak. I guess I could look at it as a head start!
