Re: Tank rack
Tank cycling!(5gl)
Had the ammonia between 0-.25
Nitrites were a strong 5
Added a few drops ammonia and no change, repeated and still no change.
through in a cap full and no change and a second cap full and jumped to 5.
again.
The ammonia level has started dropped again finally and nitrites holding
at 5.. 6 in 1strip says nitrates high also ( know not recommend).
What are the chances these will level off soon or should I start over?

Re: Tank rack
Im not to sure if im honest. Ive never cycled a tank before. Once the ammonia and nitrites are dropping to 0 within 12 hours of adding the ammonia its cycled.

Re: Tank rack
I'll just go on that premise then. I'll watch and test approx. every 12 hr
since I'm off for two days. I'll be able manage a stricter schedule. As always
thanks.

and finally the nitrates to be almost gone. !'m fairly c-c-c-confident its starting.

Re: Tank rack
No, but I've been in constant contact with him and even offered to mail the
money in advance. He said no worries as he'll have it in his car with him
and I can meet him any day at the ferry dock Mom. - Fri. at 4:30.
I don't get off work until 4;30 so will have to sweet talk my roommate or a
friend to meet him. I prefer to meet with him so he knows me as there might be other deals!

Re: Tank rack
I'm thinking maybe the Red Acaras might be fun or maybe Apistos. The Rams
are slipping down the list but haven't been completely ruled out. If I were to see a real striking selection I might still end with them.

Re: Tank rack
Do they mix well with others?
I see you recommended the leaf fish again which I like.
Also wouldn't mind having a dog face or dwarf puffers!

Re: Tank rack
Anything tht could go in there mouth will go in there mouth. There very aggressive and wont hesitate to attack any fish when breeding no matter what size it is.
Leaf fish are amazing one of my dream fish but the only problem is they are impossible to get of lives and a adult would need feeding about 3 adult guppies a day so you would need a crazy amount of guppies or similar fish to keep them.
For a Dogface puffer you would need to times the tank size by atleast 5. They need a tank atleast 100G but 150G+ being best. Dwarf puffers would work. You could fit in about 6.

Re: Tank rack
I'm just speculating but wouldn't it be necessary to have some current
flowing in the bottom of the tank to help simulate the Leaf Fish's natural
surroundings. Thats the impression I gathered from the video you sent.
The Dog face puffer I saw was in a 10gl. by itself and maybe 4" long. That
was at a lfs years ago. I do like the dwarfs too!

Re: Tank rack
I dont think it matters to much aslong as the can hid in amongst them. They also seem to like leafs near the surface so they can look down on there food. Its worth looking on youtube at some of the videos. It may sound a little harsh but i think its amazing watching them hunt and eat other fish its just so interesting how they do it and the speed the strike at.
This video is amazing to watch (Warning it is eating live fish)

That doesnt sound to good. It was in a marine tank right?

It was so long ago I couldn't tell you for sure. It was mixed in with fresh
water fish so I assumed it was. They require brackish water don't they?
It doesn't bother me to see other species eating each other. What concerns me more is the
reactions of others that breed their likes and hear of others using their choices as feeders.
Homo Sapiens are the only mammal that drinks milk after its been weened from the nipple!

Re: Tank rack
Ive done some searching and apparently they need a saltiness of 1.020-1.025 sg which i think is classed as marine but you might be right.
