Deformed or Bitten Puffer?

Post by 2tall on Sun Jan 09, 2011 6:29 pm

I was at Walmart yesterday and always have to have a look at their fish. They had a tank with some
Spotted Puffers. Well one was laying on the bottom and on closer inspection I realized it had no tail
what so ever. Just a body with a face! Poor little one can only lay on its belly! Unless its pectorals were
tired from doing all the work. It didn't appear the tail was bitten off as I looked for an obvious sign of a
wound.

I might have volunteered to take it home as I don't see anyone buying that one, but ill prepared with
live food or their requirements. Will they eat prepared foods such as flakes and frozens?

Could be either really. They dont do well crammed in small tanks witheach other so it could easily of been lost in a fight or it could have been born like it. If there was no signs the probably born like it which doesnt really give it a chance because unlike if it lost it in a fight it will never grow back. Unless someone rescues it i cant see it lasting long because there very aggressive with each other.

Sorry i must have posted just before you added this bit. They love snails and need them to help keep there teeth ground down. You could get a 30l storage box and just throw in as many sails as you can get and let them breed. Add snails daily along with frozen aswell. Its unlikely they will take dried foods but some do. You can feed them prawns and mussels aswell but dont leave them in there too long or they will mess up your water quality.

The only problem is buy spotted puffer im guessing there talking about Tetraodon nigroviridis which get 6" and nee brackish conditions as they mature.

You're probably correct as it said 5" on the tank label. I'd have to buy a
small setup which if I had the extra money I'd certainly consider.

I'll look in a few days and see if its still there. If its gone than I'll assume someone with puffer experience
took it home to care for it. Better for the puffer TBH!

Sounds like a plan. Long term the min tank size would be 36x18x18 with 48x18x18 being alot better. If im honest even iy it was housed on itself i dont think it would ever do to god. If you like puffers they i think you would be better of getting a smaller freshwater puffer. I get its nice to rescue a fish and bits but by buying it it just shows your LFS theres a market for them and will make them think its of to leave fish like that in there because someone will still buy them.

Walmart is a department store with a small fish section in the pet area.

Its a wonder the employees can turn water on to change the water in
the Betta cups! GRRRRRRRR!!!!! They have no business being in the live
fish business!
