Blue Acaras

Post by 2tall on Wed Jan 12, 2011 5:35 pm

To make a short story long I've been meaning to see this guys fish selection as he also deals in
used tanks and other equipment. I needed a 100wt heater so I made the trek there for a look see
at the same time.

I wasn't to thrilled overall with some of the tank conditions. They were either clean or filthy looking.
There didn't seem to be any grey matter what so ever. Looking around his house as I waded through
the clutter it didn't come as a shock. One needed a shovel to get through to the other side of the
living room. It was knee high! I don't think he has hoarders disease unless a lazy slob fits the description. Maybe its 50/50!

Anyway he had around 30 or so Blue Acaras remaining from a spawn in a clean 10gl. tank priced at
$2-1/2 apiece. Nice price! Very handsome looking fish as they were starting to colour up with the blue
and the orange edging on the dorsel fin. They average around 1.5" and if my finances come around soon
I'm thinking of buying a group of 5. I might have to temporally house them in a 10gl. for a short period
until I can arrange a larger home.

House doesnt sound to good but acaras sound great. If your looking for a breeding pair then yeah your best to get 5 and wait for 2 to pair. They should be fine in a 10G till there about 2" but much bigger and there likely to get stunted, It would also be best to do daily 20% wc or atleast every other day so they grow normally. For an adult pair a 40G tank should do the job with room for a few dithers and maybe a couple of catfish.

I'd probably more inclined to get a 55gl. rather than a 40gl..

Speaking of dithers I did see some of the bronze rasboras you informed
me of awhile back. I really like them and hope to see more around in the
future. Thanks! My dithers to be if they are around.

Fair enough the bigger the better.

There stunning but i think they would become expensive food if you put them in with a BA. Something bigger like Dwarf neon rainbow fish, Congo tetra or Emperor tetra would be best.

Yeah i like Congos aswell but Emperors get the edge for me. You can get Yellowtail congo tetra which are a little more colourful.
