quick need help!

Post by liz2 on Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:55 pm

Ok I have gone brain dead....only had small betta tanks for so long. Have just bought a 17 gallon tank and stand for my 2 fancy goldfish I rescued...It has a fluval 2 filter with it, cant remember if it needs cleaning with their water, no that doesnt work, shall I get new sponges? The filter sponge from the tank they are in just isnt big enough for their new tank. So new tank is filled with water and there is no rush to put them in for about a week, but I need help with the filter. Also do I put water conditioner in now or just before I put them in. Give me bettas any day... Love

Do you plan on cycling the tank and using established bacteria?

I'd put the water conditioner in now to get rid of the chlorine so the filter bacteria can start to grow.

I'd add water conditioner now, and also an air bubble stone to keep the water circulating so it doesn't go funny if it's goldie free for a week. Also add some of their current water to the tank before adding the fish so that you have some cycled water to work with

Rinse the sponges in a bucket of their tank water and use them alongside some new sponge in the new filter when you add the fish and you should be good to go

I'm concerned that the Fluval 2 (is it a "plus"?) won't be enough for the goldies. I was using a fluval 4 plus and 2 elite stingrays in my 140l goldie tank.

Can you not immerse the out flow of the filter? There should be a little thing on the front of the filter with a + on one side and a - on the other... that controls the flow.
