I think my catfish are starting a family

Post by Better than Betta on Tue Apr 26, 2011 4:32 am

Hi everyone......I have a tank with 2 bettas and a couple of guppies and platties in them as well as 2 bronze catfish. I'm just wondering how these little guys breed because I have found the front of my fish tank littered with clutches of eggs. I know it couldn't be from the other fish so is it catfish eggs.? If they are when do they start to hatch and what do I do when they do. I have never encountered this before and I'm really excited about it. Very Happy

the eggs will need seperating and will need an airstone otherwise they will get fungus, i think they take 3days? to hatch but don't quote me on that.

Sorry im a bit late but hopefully this will still help. when you say clutches of eggs do you mean as in there all toughing or whas there just a few eggs layed on the glass near eachother? if they where all bundled together it sounds like snail eggs but if they where spread out then i would say it was the corys. they will eat there eggs so they need to be removed and put in a container or something with and air stone to keep the water flowing, they should hatch after 3-4 day but the fry are tiny and very hard to feed.

if they're little balls about 2mm across and creamy white stuck to the glass in small groups, they're eggs from your bronze corys. Half the time they're infertile (go darker after a couple of days), and the adults will eat them if you're not careful.

If you want to try and hatch them, you need a single flat razorblade to scrape them off the glass, otherwise you'll burst them - they're firmly attached. They need to go into a breeding trap with a drop of meth blue squirted over them to stop fungus growing, and if you're lucky there'll be babies.

We've had lots of eggs laid over the years but none have ever hatched, I usually just leave them.

Yes I knew they weren't snail eggs I don't have any in this tank. I have to tell everyone that I wasn't quick enough in removing them and within a day or so they were gone. So I'll have to wait for the next time and be ready. Do they breed on a regular basis or do I have to wait months?

I haven't had much to do with catties as we call them over here. But as far as I know they are corydoras. Do you have any in your tanks? I'm starting to venture out into other fish species and corys have captured my heart they are so cute. Love Love

I only have one Cory and its a Pepper Cory. They didn't inform me at the store that they should be kept in groups so they can shoal together. Its such a nice fish and doesn't bother any of the others. When I can, I plan on getting a few more since she was moved from a 5gl to a 20gl long tank. There must be around twenty varieties. Some people say one should keep like ones and I've read that you can mix them if you wish.

I have 3 Albino Bristle Nose and I think they are great fish too.
