Re: cant decide ???
I go with the females:) A group of 6/7, nicely planted with some bottom dwellers like Khuli loach.
Re: cant decide ???
I say males :p i have a 60 litre, it has been divided 3 ways before but I prefer it divided 2, the fish seem much happier with that little bit extra space

Betta sororities can be very risky, and depend on the temperament of the individual fish as well as the amount of decor in the tank. A sorority of young fish may be fine for months and then one girl will go on a killing spree because their personalities can shift when they reach maturity.
Sororities can be made to work, some people get very lucky and some are very unlucky. Personally, I think only people with experience and the resources to remove violent females and house them separately on a moment's notice should try. If you are not in those categories, perhaps you should consider keeping separated males instead. I find that solitary fish are much more engaged with their owners anyway.

Re: cant decide ???
Our sorority tank (6 females and 6 cories) is my favourite tank to watch in the whole flat. It even beats the dwarf puffers for entertaining social antics. We have our very heavily planted with sil and live plants and it's fab. We had trouble at first with them but after a few days they figured out who came where in the pecking order and settled down. I would vote for ladies if the poll would let me...

Re: cant decide ???
I must agree the social interaction between female bettas is amazing
i have mine 24 in my 300 litre community and 8 in my 400 litre community
They are such amusing fish - yes they did have little squabbles in the 300 but was soon sorted and the main trouble makers were moved to the 400 tank
They all rest close to each other nearlly cuddling lovely to watch and at feeding time they really hunt the food - more than when they were in a smaller group
I did find it was the lower ranking girls who squabbled more than the alpha females
