Re do of my 29 gallon

Post by Newfishy on Tue Jun 30, 2009 3:06 am

I forgot to take a before pick. basicly lots of plants dieing (unknown causes and accidently bought a few non aquatic plants) alge in places hard to scrub off. yellow play sand that constantly looked poop covered and ugly.

now has new fine black sand, a few live plants and a many replacement silk ones. the silk plants are a little brighter colored then I normaly do, however price and softness was perfect so thats what I got.

got everything set up and done and the filters wouldnt restart. this has been an on going problem with my cheap walmart bought filters. every time the power bliped or I would turn them off for maintaince they wouldnt restart. this time they both finaly gave up the ghost and I had to get a replacement. had a heck of a time jamming the used filter media in with the old but I got it done.

also accidently poured a bunch of old goop from the old filter into the tank, priceless I tell you. so as long as tank stats remain good the girl bettas are getting added and pictures will follow.

well heres the tank redone. the black background does not show up well for some reason, I think because its matt construction paper. I love how I can see little eyes stareing back at me. the stocking is 5 ct females, 1 vt female, 5 gold tetras, 1 platy and a few corys.

I had 3 more what I thought where vt females, as I wanted a large group, but once I got them all in the tank I very quickly realised 3 where young males. Im going to give those away.

It's so lame when you buy a plant and find out it's non-aquatic, happened to me once too. But those nasty pet stores won't fool me again. :3 As for males in disguise, what bad luck to get three. I've heard that young males sometimes display a false ovipositor to ward off aggressive siblings. I guess you'll have to try to get them to flare and look for a manly gill beard. The little ones can be difficult, though..

Anyway, sorority tanks sort of need to be unaesthetically overfilled with decor anyway, at the end of the day it's about the ladies getting along. Besides, once everything fills in it'll look even better.

I am thinking about switching to sand I was wondering what kind you have. I like your tank! I think it's nice and the black sand makes their colors show Smile

its black sand sold at the local lfs. shop around some places its super expensive, this stuff was 3 bucks per 5 pound bag at my local superpets. dont buy their fish though, its disgusting and not well kept. though the other products are sometimes cheap.
