Plants?

Hey again! A lot of you know about my plan for the re-vamped tank at the end of the month :D I have never had live plants before :shock: I was thinking Java Ferns? Easy to take care of right? I like the look of them. How do I care for them? Can I plant them in the sand? I really don't know how to care for them at all I just heard they are easy, so any tips would be helpful :D

Yep, Java fern is pretty simple to carea for thumbup

You can plant it in sand, in fact sand would be better than gravel. You can get java fern already attached to bogwood which looks really nice. Normal aquarium lighting should be enough for it :D

There's a lot of contradicting info about java fern, most of the people on UKAPS will say that it shouldn't be planted but attatched to bog wood as the roots should be left out to allow the plant to grow. But I have seen people with it planted, can't remember if there was any problems scratch

Anyway, once it's tied to something the roots will grow onto the wood/stone and you will no longer need the fishing line. They do have a habit of melting, but soon bounce back. Mostly too high lighting that causes melting.

Java fern grows great on our driftwood as well as in the gravel with no problems. You might try some form of plant pellet next to the roots to give it a head start. Good luck!

java works best out of gravel but it will grow in gravel or fine sand, play sand will choke the roots.

oh coral sand is brilliant for plants too I meant to say.
