Hood Questions
Ok, I have never used a hood on any of my tanks before and I wanted to on my new re-vamped tank. My question is, I have a filter that hangs on the side of the tank, so how do I get a hood that fits? Prolly a dumb question but I have no clue!

Re: Hood Questions
If its a plastic hood, you can cut out a piece to fit over the filter. Place the hood on, and mark where the filter comes to. Best to cut too small a gap and gradually increase it, rather than cutting off too much

Re: Hood Questions
Is there a certain one you suggest?

Re: Hood Questions
The main maker of simple plastic hoods is Clearseal. They are just basic hoods, that you can fit a light into yourself. I would imagine a place like Big Al's would have these or a similar product?
Newfishy would probably know though:)

Yep, the clearseal ones you can cut with scissors, although i prefer to use a craft knife

Re: Hood Questions
Ok Big Al's Online didn't have that kind but I am looking! Hope I find one! Then what kind of bulb do you suggest?

Re: Hood Questions
I found some on this Fish and Fins UK website. So how come they don't have an exact 20" by 10"? Do I get the 18" by 10"?

Re: Hood Questions
Was gunna say that your tank is the wrong size for clearseal i think.
Is your tank rimmed? ie does it have a trim inside the outer rim? and what lighting are you using?

Re: Hood Questions
Yes it has trim. But I am not using the tank that is going to have the hood right now. For the moment one of my females in a temporary 6 gallon acrylic tank and the other is in another temporary tank because I did have three but one died of old age and two wasn't a good number so I separated them.

Re: Hood Questions
Hmmm...looks like clearseal dont do a 20x10? You may have to look at different options?
I have used glass on one of mine, and used spot lights above. The glass was only £9 which is around $13 I haven't got a picture but will do one tomorrow:)
It'll be easier to show you with pictures

Re: Hood Questions
Ok! So is it possible to have lights but not a hood that actually clips onto the tank? I wasn't originally going to use a hood, but I want to slow down the evaporation rate as fast evaporation equals really bad hard water lines! And I heard a hood can prevent divider jumping?

Re: Hood Questions
That sort of thing would be fine....as long as you're not having live plants. If you're getting silk ones then it would be great
