Apple Snails go crazy !!

Post by babyd on Sat Aug 01, 2009 9:01 pm

Okay, me beloved Golden Apple Snails, Ludwig and Ermintrude are obviously happy in their home with me, only had them a month and they have been at it like rabbits lol
Anyway, opened the lid of their tank tonight to find Ermintrude laying stacks and stacks of eggs !!!!
Now I would like a few babies as Ludwig and Ermintrude are adults and so may not be around much longer, so it would be nice to have some of their children to carry on, but not this many !!! I know I can scrape the eggs off, but it seems cruel, but I may have to, no way can I house that many little-uns. Im so torn, want to see some apple babies but not all of them lol
Could I just scrape them and leave a few behind?

lol, nah, I would not like to take responsibility for posting the poor things. It would cost more to get the stuff to ship them safely than they could cover lol

Think I'll have to split them up, ah bless them, they are in love too........trouble is the females store it so she could lay loads more argghhhhh.
I might try to scrape most away and leave just some, if it works. They are such a lovely shade of gold it would be nice to see a few baby ones. I have 2 pinks on the way too, oh crikey, will try to sex them if they are big enough and separate them lol

Just bought a new bigger tank for my wcmm today, bet they'll start next, once its cycled and they move in....

I used to breed apple snails and usually without the eggs being kept warm and moist they dont all hatch. its usually that only the middle of the clutch hatches as they have been kept moist. also i had 3 clutches hatch last year and ended up with only 56 babies which is bad considering how many hatched but i guess thats why they have so many.

mmmm, may try to keep a few eggs but scrape the rest, best to do it now before they develop and hatch. Its exciting but scary too when you see so many eggs . I was honestly shocked they bred so fast, mind you they are spoilt, they get lettuce, cucumber, apple, peas and sweetcorn (which they go nuts for) oh, and algae wafers. No wonde they are happy

I scraped them this morning, seemed the most responsible thing to do as I cannot look after hundreds ........I feel bad but ultimately its better than having loads of snails I can't home. And I would eventually have to start removing eggs at some point, couldn't let every clutch hatch anyway. I di some research last night and it seesm this is the kindest thing to do.
I have dropped them in water too as i know they can't survive that.

Don't hate me.........besides Im stressed enough as Loki blew his new tail growth again, due to a nitrite spike caused by a flippin neon coral ! (see thread here for full details.......http://www.bettaparadiseforum.com/betta-showcase-f9/okay-im-finally-ready-to-let-you-see-him-t949.htm) ARGGHHHH
